# What Is Hardstanding in Construction? Types and Build-Up

1 November 2026  ·  Trent Construction

In construction, hardstanding is any hard, load-bearing external surface built to carry vehicles, plant or stored materials without rutting, sinking or breaking up. On commercial sites it usually means an engineered concrete slab laid on a compacted sub-base, designed for the heaviest loads the area will see.

The term covers everything from a lorry park to the base under a generator. What they have in common is that they sit outside, carry heavy and often badly behaved loads, and have to shed water. This guide explains the main types, how a concrete hardstanding is built, and what decides its thickness.

## Where you find hardstanding

- **Yards and service areas.** Loading yards, bin stores and service roads, where HGVs turn under load and trailer legs punch down through a small contact area.
- **Lorry parks and circulation routes.** Continuous heavy vehicle movement, braking and standing loads.
- **Plant and equipment bases.** Bases for generators, transformers, tanks and process plant, often set out to tight tolerances to suit the equipment.
- **Storage and compounds.** External stacking areas, waste and recycling yards, and site compounds.
- **Energy sites.** Bases and access areas for solar farms and battery storage. See [concrete foundations for solar farms and battery storage](https://www.trentcs.com/knowledge/concrete-foundations-solar-farms-battery-storage).

## Types of hardstanding

The material is chosen for the loading, the life expected of the surface and the budget.

| Type | Best suited to | Watch out for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Concrete | The heaviest and most concentrated loads, long design life, low maintenance | Joint layout, falls and curing have to be designed, not improvised |
| Asphalt | Roads and car parks with moving traffic, quick to lay and repair | Softer under standing point loads such as trailer legs, plant outriggers and stacked materials |
| Block paving | Lighter traffic and areas that will be dug up and reinstated | Settlement and rutting where heavy vehicles turn |
| Compacted aggregate | Temporary compounds and low-cost storage | Ruts, dust and potholes under regular heavy traffic |

For a commercial yard that takes HGVs and plant every day, concrete is the usual answer, because it spreads point loads and keeps its shape for decades if it is designed properly.

## How a concrete hardstanding is built

- **Formation.** The ground is excavated and the formation level prepared and compacted. Its strength decides how much work the layers above have to do.
- **Sub-base.** A layer of compacted granular material spreads the load and gives a firm, level platform to pour on. A loose or out-of-level sub-base is paid for later, in concrete volume or in cracking.
- **Reinforcement.** Steel mesh, structural fibres or both, chosen with the engineer. The choice affects crack control, joint spacing and how the slab is poured.
- **The slab.** External specifications commonly adopt concrete grades in the C32/40 and RC40 range for durability and freeze-thaw resistance. Slabs are usually laid in long strips.
- **Joints.** Placed to follow the traffic and the drainage. Joints in the wheel path of turning HGVs are where yards start to fail.
- **Falls and drainage.** Gradients and drain positions are designed in from the start. Water that ponds finds the joints, and in the UK it then freezes.
- **Finish and curing.** A brushed or tined finish gives grip. A power floated finish gives density and is easier to keep clean. The slab is then protected from wind, sun and frost while it cures.

## How thick should a hardstanding be?

There is no single figure. Thickness comes from the loading and the ground, and on a commercial job it is set by the engineer. The Britpave Concrete Hardstanding Design Handbook is the usual reference for external concrete hardstandings in the UK.

The questions that drive it are the heaviest vehicle that will really use the area, the worst-case point loads from trailer legs and plant outriggers, and the strength of the ground underneath. The concrete slabs we lay are typically 150 to 250mm thick, sometimes much thicker, with steel or fibre reinforcement to suit the design.

## Why hardstandings fail

Most failures trace back to one of three things:

- **Too thin for the real loading.** Designed for a car park and used as a lorry yard, or for vehicles but not for the trailer legs they stand on.
- **Joints in the wrong place.** Laid out for the convenience of the pour, not for the traffic.
- **Water left on the surface.** Falls treated as an afterthought, so water sits, gets into the joints and freezes.

## Hardstanding or internal floor?

An external hardstanding and an internal industrial floor are different problems, even when they are priced on the same project. A warehouse floor is judged on flatness under forklifts on predictable routes. A yard is judged on durability under turning HGVs, weather and point loads, and nobody surveys it for flatness. The detail is on our [concrete hardstanding](https://www.trentcs.com/concrete-flooring/hardstanding) page, and internal floors are covered under [industrial concrete flooring](https://www.trentcs.com/concrete-flooring).

## Commercial concrete hardstanding from Trent

Trent Construction Services builds heavy-duty external concrete hardstandings for main contractors and commercial clients across the UK: yards, service areas, lorry parks and plant bases. We typically lay 250 to 500m² a day in long strips, with our own operatives and our own plant, including concrete line pumps where the pour face cannot be reached directly. We work on commercial projects only.

Send us the drawings and the loading brief and we will tell you straight how we would build it. [Discuss your project](https://www.trentcs.com/contact).
