Concrete foundations and flooring for solar farms and battery storage: what main contractors should look for

What actually needs concrete on a solar and BESS site

The UK has more than 32GW of solar in the development pipeline, and the projects being consented today look different from the ones built five years ago. Almost every new scheme pairs panels with battery energy storage, and battery storage changes the groundworks brief entirely.

Panels sit on piles. Batteries, substations and inverter stations sit on concrete: engineered bases, reinforced slabs and access hardstandings that have to be right first time, because these sites are remote, programme driven and unforgiving of return visits.

At Trent we have spent around 35 years laying concrete that has to perform for decades, and the same principles apply whether the slab carries a production line or a battery container in a Lincolnshire field.

More needs concrete than most people expect. A typical scheme includes bases for the battery energy storage containers themselves, foundations for the site substation and switchgear, plinths for inverter and transformer stations, cable trench works, and the access roads and crane hardstandings that everything arrives on. On larger schemes there may be a control building with its own floor slab, and security and welfare infrastructure besides.

Each of these has its own specification. A BESS base is not a shed base: it carries serious point loads, needs precise level tolerances for containerised plant, and often has bunding and containment requirements built into the design. Getting one element wrong can hold up energisation of the whole site.

Why flatness and level matter more than people think

Battery storage arrives as containerised plant, craned onto its base in a day. The container does not adapt to the concrete; the concrete has to be right before the container arrives. Out-of-tolerance bases mean packing, remedial works and delay, on sites where every week of delay pushes back the revenue date the whole project is financed against.

This is where specialist flooring experience earns its keep. Laying to tight flatness and level specifications is our core trade. The same discipline that puts a floor within a fine tolerance across a large warehouse slab puts a battery base exactly where the manufacturer's drawings say it should be.

Programme: pouring well on remote sites

Solar and storage sites are rarely next to a ready mix plant. Concrete supply, pour sequencing and weather windows all need planning around, and the plant you bring determines how much programme risk you carry.

Trent runs its own teams and its own plant, including two of the only three track-mounted concrete placing booms in the UK, a Somero S22EZ laser screed and three concrete line pumps. In practice that means large pours placed quickly and accurately without waiting on hired equipment, fewer people needed on the pour, and the ability to reach awkward positions without building temporary access. On a remote energy site, that self-sufficiency is the difference between holding programme and losing it.

What to ask a concrete subcontractor before you tender the works

A short checklist that separates specialists from generalists.

  • Do they hold Constructionline Gold and current SSIP accreditation, and can they show it before the tender stage rather than after?
  • Do they own the plant they will rely on, or does the programme depend on the hire market?
  • Can they evidence work to tight flatness and level specifications, not just volume poured?
  • Have they delivered on live, remote or restricted sites where access and sequencing had to be planned rather than assumed?
  • Will the same teams that price the work deliver it?

Common questions

What foundations do battery storage units need?
Containerised BESS units typically sit on reinforced concrete bases designed for the manufacturer's point loads and level tolerances, often with containment requirements in the design. The base must be complete, cured and within tolerance before the unit is craned in.
How flat does a battery storage base need to be?
Tolerances are set by the container manufacturer and the project engineer, and they are typically tight, because containerised plant cannot adapt to an uneven base. Specialist laser-guided screeding equipment is the reliable way to hit them first time.
Can concrete works be phased around energisation on a live energy site?
Yes. With the right plant and method, pours can be sequenced around access restrictions, other trades and energisation milestones. We plan pour sequencing with the main contractor as part of pricing the works.
Do you work for main contractors or directly for site owners?
Both. Most of our work comes through main contractors, but we also price works directly for developers, operators and landowners with concrete requirements on energy sites.
